“See 100 years of history packed into two weeks of world class tennis and entertainment,” was the message from Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard at today’s launch of Australian Open 2005, presented by Kia, which marks the centenary of the Grand Slam tournament.
Fans can expect another action-packed fortnight - both on and off the court - as the top names of world tennis gather at Melbourne Park from 17-30 January 2005 for the first Grand Slam of the new season.
The sport’s top players will vie for a record prize pool of AUD$19.1million – one of the biggest in world sport – with the men’s and women’s winners picking up a cool AUD$1,206,620 each.
Australian Open Chief Executive, Paul McNamee, said, “Tennis is entering a dynamic new era with the women’s game seeing an exciting band of young Russians winning three out of the four Grand Slams in 2004, and Switzerland’s Roger Federer raising the bar to new heights in the men’s game.
“But responding to Roger’s challenge is Lleyton Hewitt who has made no secret of the fact that his current focus is on winning the Grand Slam he used to attend as a young boy.
“Also out to make his own piece of history will be four time champion Andre Agassi who thrives on the Rebound Ace of Melbourne Park, while the popular 2002 and 2004 finalist Marat Safin, will be hungry to go one step further in 2005,” said McNamee.
“World No.2 Andy Roddick will also have the Australian Open title in his sights, as will a trio of top ranked Argentinians in Guillermo Coria, French Open champion Gaston Gaudio and David Nalbandian. Add to that talents such as 1997 finalist Carlos Moya, and Tim Henman who’s in the best form of his career, and we’ve got two weeks of world-class match-ups in store,” he added.
“Among the women, current Champion Justine Henin-Hardenne will be defending her title against a formidable challenge from the awesome array of talented Russians who have emerged as Grand Slam champions in 2004. At the French we saw Anastasia Myskina, at Wimbledon Maria Sharapova, and now the newest member of the Grand Slam club, US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
“Combine that with the ever present threat of 2003 champion Serena Williams, back-to-back champion in 2001 and 2002 Jennifer Capriati, world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo, and currently one of the hottest players on the tour, Lindsay Davenport - who won here in 2000 - and it’s a field that is jam packed with possible winners,” said McNamee.
