2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC New York Jets
Location: East Rutherford, New Jersey
Stadium: The Meadowlands
Coach: Eric Mangini
NFL Championships: AFL-NFL Super Bowl III (1968)
With two draft picks, the Jets hope to begin to rebuild the Jets into a team worth getting to the playoffs. Vernon Gholston is the future in the linebacker core and Dustin Keller might be the over the middle threat the team needs in the future.
The rest of the New York Jets offense really hinges on Laveranues Coles, whose legs are starting to slow down as he begins to play in his 30s. Thomas Jones is a solid, but unremarkable back and Jerricho Cotchery has become a solid starter. Now Brett Farve will have something to do with this years fame or miss fortune. Will Brett have what it still takes to take the Jets to the Playoffs and possibly the Superbowl.
The New York Jets hope the defense can make an impact this season with nose tackle Kris Jenkins, and linebackers Eric Barton and Calvin Pace.
Some New York Jets history: In 1969 the Jets, then members of the American Football League (AFL), recorded one of the most dramatic upsets in professional football history, stunning the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The team was led by head coach Weeb Ewbank, wide receiver Don Maynard, and charismatic quarterback Joe Namath. New York joined the NFL in 1970.
