2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC Oakland Raiders
Location: Oakland, California
Stadium: McAfee Stadium
Coach: Art Shell
NFL Championships: Super Bowl XI (1976), Super Bowl XV (1980) & Super Bowl XVIII (1983)
Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders made another splash in the NFL draft with the selection of flashy offensive weapon Darren McFadden. Once he’s joined with quarterback of the future JaMarcus Russell, we expect fireworks.
Since the devastating loss in 2002, the Raiders have scrambled to find their winning ways. The AFC West has been prime for the picking in the last few years and the Raiders are hoping to get in on the division title before the window closes.
The team is ready to hand over the offense to JaMarcus Russell after he waited on the sideline as other quarterbacks failed miserably. He and a running game that will combine the efforts of speedy Justin Fargas and rookie Darren McFadden must keep the defense off the field. Having Ronald Curry and Javon Walker at wide out is not going to scare anyone, but there are teams with worse tandems.
The Raiders are hoping the addition of DeAngelo Hall to the secondary will do something to stop the scoring. Teams almost score over 400 points on them last season.
Some Oakland Raiders history: The Raiders were professional football’s most consistent team from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, reaching the playoffs 15 times and earning four NFL or American Football League (AFL) titles in 19 seasons. As AFL champions, they played in the second Super Bowl, in 1968, and lost to the Green Bay Packers (33-14). During John Madden’s ten years as head coach (1969-1978), Oakland played in seven league or conference championship games and won one Super Bowl, in 1977. From 1980 to 1993 the team reached the postseason eight times, winning the Super Bowl in 1981 and 1984. The Raiders are the only team that appeared in at least one Super Bowl each decade during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
