2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
AFC San Diego Chargers
Location: San Diego, California
Stadium: Qualcomm Stadium
Coach: Norv Turner
NFL Championships: None
The Chargers had a fantastic 2007 season, culminating with an appearance in the AFC championship game.
San Diego moved beyond the dominating running game of Ladanian Tomlinson because of the impressive play of QB Philip Rivers down the stretch.
The offense is et with Rivers, Tomlinson, tight end Antonio Gates, and receivers Chris Chambers and Vincent Jackson.
Jackson emerged as the number one threat last year and Chambers is a solid possession guy. There really is no third option, but Gates is more of a receiver than a blocker anyway. The only question is who will take up Michael Turner's role as the backup running back. Rookie Jacob Hester is expected to play that role.
The fact that the biggest problem is finding a second running back while most teams lack one great one is scary. Chargers fans will need to hold on their seats as the offense blows teams away.
The defense is young and great too. Shawne Merriman is an All-Pro middle linebacker and the corners, Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cromartie proved themselves in the playoffs last season. The defense is back, the offense is back, and the Chargers have the most enviable tickets on the West Coast.
Some San Diego Chargers history: From 1960 to 1965 the Chargers won five division championships and one league crown in the American Football League (AFL). Wide receiver Lance Alworth set a professional football record by catching at least one pass in 96 consecutive games from 1962 to 1970. During the late 1970s and early 1980s head coach Don Coryell oversaw one of the most explosive offensive units in NFL history. The team was led by quarterback Dan Fouts and wide receiver Charlie Joiner, who both set career team records Fouts with 43,040 passing yards and 254 passing touchdowns and Joiner with 586 receptions.
