2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC St. Louis Rams
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Stadium: Edward Jones Dome
Coach: Scott Linehan
NFL Championships: League Champions in1945 & 1951, Super Bowl XXXIV (1999)
After struggling to score for he first time in more than a decade, offensive coordinator was given an off-season to improve his offensive line and give some bite back to the offense. Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson need to perform – and quickly – in St. Louis, or we expect coach Scott Linehan to be unemployed in December. The Rams used the NFL draft to pick standout defensive end Chris Long, and have begun to plan for new receivers to replace Torry Holt and the departed Isaac Bruce. St. Louis still needs a clear second option at receiver tough, with the departure of Isaac Bruce. Drew Bennett is the choice right now, but nobody is sure if he will make the jump from number three to number two seamlessly.
The defense needs more help another season to make the team a true playoff contender, but playing in the NFC West means that they will have a shot at delivering post-season.
Some St Louis Rams history: The Cleveland Rams were founded in 1936 as a member of the American Football League (a different league from the AFL that later merged with the NFL). A year later the team joined the NFL. The Rams moved frequently, playing in three different stadiums over several losing seasons. In 1945 a remarkable turnaround occurred as rookie quarterback Bob Waterfield led the Rams to a 9-1 win-loss record and a 15-14 victory over the Washington Redskins in the NFL Championship Game. Despite the Rams' successful season, the franchise remained unprofitable. Following the season the team moved to Los Angeles.
