Both driver and car take a beating, turning the Dover 400 into an endurance event as much as an auto race.
This high stakes race, held in September at Dover International Speedway, is the second race in the series that yields the biggest prize in auto racing, immediately following the Sylvania 300. Make no mistake, the early races in The Chase are just as important as the later races and no racing team wants to get behind the eight ball this early in the going.
Dover is a physical track, that tests driver’s and their cars. With steep banking and really severe transitions in and out of the corners, but it does give you a lot of passing opportunities. There are multiple grooves there and drivers can find a place to make your car work.
The track is like a vacuum cleaner. If the driver get's loose and starts to spin out, a single-car mishap turns into a five- or six-car pileup, when a car starts to slide down the steep banking turns.

2009 AAA 400 Results
 Jimmie Johnson closed September in basically the same situation as he did last year, fresh off a victory and within 10 points of first place.
But plenty separated Sunday's triumph at Dover International Speedway from one year ago at Kansas Speedway, scheduling being one of them. Besides the race occurring one event earlier in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Johnson created his own destiny in winning Sunday's AAA 400 rather than benefiting from someone's failed gamble, leading 271 of the 400 laps from the pole.
