Some History and Facts about the The Masters PGA golf Tournament

The Masters is one of the four majors or "Grand Slam" Tournaments for good reason. The more difficult holes are the 11th, 12th, and 13th.

The Masters Golf Tournament takes place at the Augusta National Golf Club, 2604 Washington Rd., Augusta, GA. The course is regularly ranked among the top 5 golf courses in the U.S. The course was originally designed by Bobby Jones & Alister Mackenzie in 1933 with other designers adding their touch with changes over the years including Perry Maxwell, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio.

Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold a golf tournament in 1934. Roberts suggested calling it the Masters, but Jones thought that was overreaching a bit so they settled on the name Augusta National Invitation Tournament. After drawing a field of what was indeed the masters of the game of golf for five years in a row, they switched back to the original name and in 1939 the Masters Pro Golf Tournament was played at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, GA. The Masters has been played every year since then except for 1943, 1944 and 1945 when cattle were allowed to graze on the greens to help the war effort. The winner of the Masters is awarded the Green Jacket. The roll call of the names of those who've worn the Masters' Green reads like a Golfers Hall of Fame: Sarazen, Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Player, Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

The US Masters attracts a select field to the Augusta National Golf Club which Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts built in the 1930s. 107 players were invited to partake in the Masters golf tournament April 5-8 at Augusta National in Georgia, although only 97 are expected to tee off.

Past champions Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Tommy Aaron, Gay Brewer, Jack Burke, Billy Casper, Charles Coody, Doug Ford and Bob Goalby will all take a pass.

Tiger Woods has won the Masters on four occasions since 1997 and holds the event record.

Tiger Woods shot an impressive four-under 68 on Saturday to double his lead and move four clear after the third round of the World Golf Championships - CA Championship.

Woods finished 54 holes at 11-under-par 205, which is good for a four-shot lead over Brett Wetterich.

Woods is five clear of Nick O'Hern, the man who knocked him out of the first WGC event of the year, the Accenture Match Play Championship.

Tiger Woods, fresh off his victory at Doral, headlines the event and is a 3/2 favorite to win the same tournament he won in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2005.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Augusta National Golf ClubAugusta National Golf Club gets its natural beauty honestly, as the venerable facility was built on the grounds of the former Fruitland Nurseries and each of the 18 holes is adorned with the trees and shrubs for which the holes are named. The course was created by club founder Bobby Jones and course architect Alister Mackenzie in 1933, and is best known for "Amen Corner" -- the 11th, 12th and 13th holes that often spell the difference between success and failure. Augusta National has been controversially lengthened in recent years, but remains a course where a delicate putting touch is mandatory.

US Masters golf gambling tips

1.) Avoid golfers with fatigue.

2.) Focus on players who are in good form.

3.) Follow trends when it comes to the most suitable courses for particular players. You should consider specializing in certain golfers as opposed to figuring out ways of gambling on every opponent. Know which golfers match up with which courses. This is no different than an NBA player having trouble playing on a particular court for example or an NFL quarterback who might be at a disadvantage playing on turf. Golf courses are more complicated and must be studied thoroughly to determine advantages or disadvantages for individual players that interest you the most.

4.) Assemble a portfolio of underdog players and consider their worth.

5.) Concentrate on 2nd and 3rd tier players. The reason for this is that most golf bettors tend to jump all over the Tiger Woods and Greg Normans. Bookmakers know this and spend most of their time adjusting the odds on these top tiered players. Less celebrity can often translate into more money.

6.) Head to head match-ups are the key to winning and should be incorporated whenever possible into the whole golf gambling equation.

2008 Masters Golf Winner Trevor Immelman

Zach JohnsonTrevor Immelman followed in the illustrious footsteps of Gary Player by becoming only the second South African winner of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National. The 28 year old completed a wire-to-wire victory with a final round of 75 for a three stroke triumph over World Number One, Tiger Woods.

Immelman, a three-time champion on The European Tour, chose the 30th anniversary of Player’s third and last victory to claim his first Green Jacket after a blustery day in Georgia which blew away the hopes and ambitions of most challengers.

And in doing so, the player who cut his teeth on The European Tour, winning three times, became the first player since Seve Ballesteros way back in 1980 to lead from start to finish.

Woods, seeking a fifth Green Jacket, finished with a level par 72 for 283 while his fellow Americans Brandt Snedeker (77) and Stewart Cink (72) claimed a share of third spot on 284, four under par.

2007 Masters Golf Winner Zach Johnson

Zach JohnsonZach Johnson's big win
With a leaderboard featuring Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Stuart Appleby, Johnson had to be considered a surprise contender, but his final-round score of 69 tied the lowest all week and led to a two-stroke victory.

American Zach Johnson cards 69 for one over and when Tiger Woods fails to make two on the last he is crowned the winner of the 2008 Masters at Augusta.

Woods ends two back after a (72) along with Retief Goosen (69) and Rory Sabbatini (69) with Justin Rose (73) on four over after a double on the 17th.

Jerry Kelly (70) is also four over, with Stuart Appleby (75) and Padraig Harrington (73) five over.

But defending champion Phil Mickelson finishes +11.
