NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
July 4, 2009
The stars of NASCAR bring out their best at Daytona Superspeedway, to host the Coke Zero 400. Sprint Cup takes on Daytona Speedway for the second time this season as NASCAR starts their engines at 8:15 p.m. and races under the lights this Saturday night for the Coke Zero 400. The Coke Zero 400 is often labeled as the “midpoint” of the racing season, this is an all-important race for drivers trying to gain points.
One of the most exciting NASCAR nighttime races on the circuit, the Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola features the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series battling for victory on the daunting 31-degree high banks of DIS. The 160-lap, 400-mile Independence Day holiday weekend classic will feature fireworks on and off the track with past winners including Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart and most recently Kyle Busch.
When the race was started in 1959, it was only 250 miles and scheduled for the morning of July 4. This led to it gaining its original name, the Firecracker 250. In 1963 it was expanded to 400 miles, and with time, it’s moved to being a night race. In 1989, Pepsi became the race’s sponsor. Pepsi was the title sponsor through 2006 but the name was changed again to reflect this. It became the Pepsi 400. Last year, Coke took over as the official drink of all the ISC tracks and thus the name became Coke Zero 400 for this year’s race. Coca-Cola is the driving force behind the Coke Zero 400 NASCAR race. This race consists of 160 laps totaling about 400 miles.
Coke Zero 400 Winner
Tony Stewart won the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola.
Stewart powered his No. 14 Burger King Impala SS across the finish line in a dramatic finish to capture his 35th victory in 374 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) races, and his third win at Daytona in his 22nd race. With the win, Stewart boosted his hold on the driver’s point lead to an 180 point advantage over second place driver, Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Impala SS. This win was Stewart’s third victory at Daytona International Speedway; all of which have come in the July race. Gordon was caught in an early multi-car accident, and finished 28th.
Stewart is the 16th driver to score three or more wins at Daytona.
