The long NASCAR season culminates in a frenzy of speed and fury on the asphalt of Homestead-Miami Speedway. Find out who’ll hoist the Nextel Cup, NASCAR’s greatest prize, with Ford 400.
The champion of the Nextel Cup be crowned at the Homestead Miami Speedway, as this race is the final one of the NASCAR season, and the Sprint Cup championship often comes down to this final weekend.
The Ford 400 is a NASCAR Nextel Cup stock car race held at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Miami Florida. This race is relatively new in the NASCAR circuit, first appearing in 1999. Since 2002, the Ford 400 has been part of the Ford Championship Weekend, or the last week of the NASCAR season. Starting in 2004, it has also been the final race in the "Chase for the Cup".
Initially the Homestead-Miami Speedway opened as a four turn rectangular oval with sharp flat turns and aprons that made passing difficult and overall low speeds. In 1997, the speedway started an $8.2 million reconfiguration project to widen the aprons by 24 feet and change from a quad oval to a continuous oval. Then again in 2003, the turns were changed from mostly flat to steep variable banking. Shortly afterwards, lights were installed to allow night racing for the first time. The renovations were praised by fans, and the track has produced a number of close finishes, including 2005's last-lap battle between Greg Biffle and Mark Martin.
In 2008, Tony Stewart cruised to his second NASCAR championship in four years at the Ford 400, capping an uncharacteristically calm season for the former bad boy. He won races, kept his temper in check and avoided every major incident long enough to cement himself as one of the greatest drivers of his time.
Needing only to run a clean race at the Ford 400, he hovered just outside the top 10 and away from any potential danger. He ended up 15th, winning the title by 35 points over Greg Biffle, and winning his second Ford 400 in a row. Stewart became just the 14th driver in NASCAR history with more than one championship and joined four-time winner Jeff Gordon as the only active full-time drivers with multiple titles.
The Homestead Miami Speedway hosts the Sprint Series championship weekend, which includes the Ford 400 Sprint Cup Series Race, the Ford 300 Nationwide Series Race, and the Ford 200 Craftsman Truck Series Race.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — As he made Sprint Cup history Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jimmie Johnson (FSY) had a clear view of those poised to keep him out of the record books in the future.
With a fifth-place finish in the Ford 400, the Hendrick Motorsports star became the first to win four consecutive titles in NASCAR's premier series and joined Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and Jeff Gordon (FSY) as the only drivers with more than three championships.
All have flashed plenty of late-season momentum, but Hamlin was the first to throw down the gauntlet after his fourth victory of 2009 — doubling his previous single-season best.
