The Epic Battle Continues at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Saturday, February 16, 2008.

Two of boxing’s best pound-for-pound brawlers – undefeated world middleweight champion KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK and once-beaten former world champion JERMAIN “Bad Intentions” TAYLOR will meet in the ring once again to battle it out for some respect because the middleweight title belt will not be a Option for Taylor in this fight.

The next fight for Kelly Pavlik was supposed to be against Ireland's John Duddy but Jermain Taylor, following his KO loss to Pavlik exercised his option for an immediate rematch. The rematch will be a non-title fight at 166-pounds.

They will resume the fierce battle that ended with Taylor stunningly suffering his first professional defeat and Pavlik being crowned the middleweight champion.

Kelly Pavlik fought an unbelievable fight at Broadwalk Hall in Atlantic City becoming the new WBC & WBO middleweight champion on September 29, 2007 by knocking out and dethroning the reigning middleweight champion Jermain Taylor in the 7th round. Pavlik caught Taylor with a straight right hand that wobbled Taylor sending him back into the corner slumped against the ropes. A finisher, Pavlik rushed in attacking Taylor with uppercuts, lefts and rights as Taylor sank to the floor. Referee Steve Smoger jumped in at 2:14 of round seven to stop the fight without a count as semi-conscious Taylor folded in the corner on the canvas.

It was a sensational win for Kelly Pavlik who established himself as the best middleweight fighter in the world by coming back in round three after being downed and badly hurt in round two as if nothing had ever happened. Like Larry Merchant said Champions get up when they don't think they can and so do challengers. Youngstown, Ohio now has itself another champion to add to its list along with Ray "Boom Boom" Manchini.

Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs), from Youngstown, Ohio, and Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs), from Little Rock, Arkansas, boast a combined record of 59-1-1 (46 KOs) – a winning percentage approaching 97% and a victory by knockout ratio of 78%! Their first fight, on September 29, was not only hailed as the “Fight of the Year” but literally rejuvenated the sport internationally. It is a rivalry that is being compared to the great middleweights of previous eras, including Graziano-Zale, Robinson-Basilo-Fullmer, and Benvenuti-Griffith.

Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) was absent from the fight announcement press conference in Manhattan on Tuesday, preferring to stay at home in Little Rock, Arkansas, where his wife Erica had gone down with a fever having given birth to their third child, daughter Laila Jayden on Monday night.

Since losing to Pavlik, Taylor has dispensed with the services of Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward and promoted long-time mentor Ozell Nelson from assistant to lead trainer.

Taylor had criticized Steward for not giving him enough sparring ahead of the Pavlik defeat, and now the former undisputed champion will going into training camp with Nelson in Las Vegas.

Kelly Pavlik defeats Jermain Taylor

Kelly PavlikKelly Pavlik defeated Jermain Taylor for the second time in five months on Saturday night, with a unanimous decision in a 12-round 'catch-weight' bout at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

Pavlik could now be in line to meet the winner of Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins after the pair have clashed on April 19. Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren, and Home Box Office are keen to match the pair.

Pavlik, 25, now unbeaten in 33 professional contests, was contractually obliged to afford Taylor a re-match after flooring the former undisputed middleweight champion on September 29, in Atlantic City, when he captured the WBC and WBO middleweight titles.
