Some History and Facts on the Preakness Stakes |
The Preakness Stakes is a classic 1 3/16 mile (1.91 km) thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, held on the third Saturday in May of each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 lb (55 kg).
Two years before the Kentucky Derby was run for the first time, Pimlico introduced its new stakes race for three-year-olds, the Preakness, during its first-ever spring race meet in 1873. Governor Bowie had named the then mile and one-half (2.41 km) race in honor of Dinner Party Stakes-winner, Preakness, from the Preakness Stables, Wayne, New Jersey.
The Maryland Jockey Club was founded in 1743, and thus today is the oldest sporting association in the North America. After 262 years it remains the corporate name of Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, which opened in 1870, and is home to the Preakness Stakes®, the middle jewel in horse racing's famed Triple Crown, and the historic Pimlico Special. In 2002, Magna Entertainment Corp. (MEC), North America's number one owner and operator of horse racetracks, based on revenues, purchased a majority share of the Maryland Jockey Club and it has become an important part of MEC's expanding network of major North American tracks.
The Preakness has been run at seven different distances:
1 1/2 miles (2.41 km) -- 1873 to 1888 and 1890
1 1/4 miles (2.01 km) -- 1889
1 1/16 miles (1.71 km) -- 1894 to 1900 and 1908
1 mile 70 yards (1.67 km) -- 1901 to 1907
1 mile (1.61 km) -- 1909 and 1910
1 1/8 miles (1.81 km) -- 1911 to 1924
1 3/16 miles (1.91 km) -- 1925 to present

131st winner of the Black Eyed Susan Preakness stakes 2006 |
Bernardini wins the 131st Preakness
The 2006 renewal of the $1,000,000 Preakness (G1), the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown, was contested at Pimlico Race Course before a paid attendance of 118,402. Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was sent off as the overwhelming 1-2 favorite in the field of nine. Tragedy struck about a furlong into the race, when Barbaro injured his right hind leg and was pulled up by jockey Edgar Prado just past the finish while the rest of the field continued around the clubhouse turn. 13-1 shot Bernardini stalked the early pace of 17-1 shot Like Now through a half in 46.69, taking over the lead at top of the stretch and drawing away to win by 5 1/4 lengths over 8-1 shot Sweetnorthernsaint in a time of 1:54.65 for 1 3/16 miles on a fast track. 29-1 outsider Hemingway's Key was third and Brother Derek, who had to check when Barbaro broke down in front of him, was fourth. The win gave jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Tom Albertrani their first in a Triple Crown event.
