2009 Presidents Cup

The eighth President's Cup golf tournament, featuring some of the world's top golfers including Tiger Woods, makes its first-ever West Coast stop Oct. 6-11 at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco.

Fred Couples will captain the United States Team against Greg Norman’s International squad. The President’s Cup is played every 2 years and is a biennial match play tournament that pits a United States team against an International team. The tournament was set up to provide golfers from outside Europe the opportunity to contest a team match play tournament equivalent to the Ryder Cup.

The tournament format used at the President’s Cup is similar to that used at the Ryder Cup, with two teams of 12 golfers contesting a selection of match play formats including foursomes, four balls and singles matches.

The President’s Cup differs from the Ryder Cup in that all 24 golfers participating in the event are required to play in match events on all three days of the tournament. This modification was introduced to prevent teams from benching weaker golfers and using a small selection of form golfers to secure victories in the various matches.

The Americans have never lost a home game, and they have not lost the Presidents Cup against the International team since 1998. The US has so far won 5 Cups, the International team has won one, and the teams have tied once. The golf excitement excitement is always huge and the locations are always stunning.

2009 Presidents Cup Results

Taking their cuse from laid-back captain Fred Couples was key. Getting an inspirational weekend visit from Amy Mickelson didn't hurt, either. But having the world's top three players was the difference for the favored U.S. in a 19 1/2-14 1/2 romp in the Presidents Cup.

While each American earned at least a 1/2 point, world No. 1 Tiger Woods, No. 2 Phil Mickelson and No. 3 Steve Stricker combined to go 13-1-1 at Harding Park as the USA moved to 6-1-1 against the Internationals.

Woods clinched the victory with a 13th-hole birdie to close out a 6-and-5 thrashing of Y.E. Yang, who came from behind in the final round to top the world No. 1 in the PGA Championship in August.
