UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez
When: December 12, 2009
Where: FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee
How: PPV
The Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts event UFC 107 is scheduled for December 12, 2009, at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. It will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between current champ, B.J. Penn (11-4-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) and challenger Diego Sanchez (17-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC).
Penn submitted Kenny Florian in his most recent defense at UFC 101 in August. Sanchez, 2-0 at 155 pounds, is coming off a split decision over Clay Guida in June.
Cheick Kongo vs. Frank Mir
UFC 107 also, features a pair of heavyweights looking to bounce back from defeats. The former heavyweight champion and recent interim title-holder Mir (12-4) suffered a second-round knockout to Brock Lesnar earlier this month at UFC 100 after previously winning consecutive bouts over Hardonk, Lesnar, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Kongo (14-5-1), who trains with the likes of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Michael Bisping at the Wolfslair in the UK, had won three-straight over Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al-Turk, and Antoni Hardonk before suffering a unanimous decision loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 in June.
Kenny Florian vs. Clay Guida
In another exciting UFC match up, lightweight standouts Kenny Florian (11-4) and Clay Guida (25-10) that will also take place on the main card of UFC 107. Both guys coming off big time losses, so there’s going to be a lot on the line when these two face off in late November.
Kenny Florian recently took lightweight champion BJ Penn into the championship rounds earlier this month in the main event of UFC 101: “Declaration” before getting submitted for the first time in his career by the jiu-jitsu “master” late in the fourth round.
The 33-year old previously fought for the UFC title one other time, falling to Sean Sherk by unanimous decision in a battle for the vacant strap back at UFC 64: “Unstoppable” in late 2006. Sence then Florian, put together an impressive six-fight win streak over many of the toughest fighters in the division, including Joe Lauzon, Din Thomas, Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson.
Guida seems to get better with every fight and is always ready to fight any opponent put in front of him. Guida, saw his three-fight win streak broken against contender Sanchez, fighting a brutal war of attrition with the original TUF alum in a June appearance at the Season 9 finale of the show. Long considered one of the toughest competitors in the division, Guida has gone 5-4 in the Octagon since making his debut at UFC 64, the same card Florian got his title shot.
